Standard detergents are formulated for cotton fibers and contain enzymes, optical brighteners, and surfactant concentrations that attack synthetic fabrics. Turning the jersey inside out does two specific things. First, it puts the abrasive friction of the wash cycle against the interior surface of the fabric rather than the printed or applied exterior.
